Is This the Future?

“I understand how (insert social media platform here) can be applied within our marketing strategy, but I’m just not sure it’s the future.”

This is a statement I hear regularly and probably one you’ve heard from friends or work colleagues before as well.  Well, I’m here to set the record straight.  They’re right, the majority of online platforms we use today probably aren’t a great representation of the way we’ll be doing business in the future.

They are; however, a very important part of the present and integral to the way businesses and consumers connect on a day to day basis.  Anyone who doesn’t believe Twitter (for example) will stand the test of time within corporate marketing strategies needs to take a step back and look at the millions of people using it today.  It is a gold mine for customer insight, regardless of what it will be ten years from now.

As I’ve said before, in a fast paced environment, companies can’t afford to be planning for the ‘future’.   The best preparation for the evolution we are sure to experience is maintaining knowledge and an understanding of what we have in front of us today.
